The Donskoy Monastery – Moscow, Russia

The Donskoy Monastery, founded in 1591, is located near to the old Kaluga road south westwards from the central part of Moscow. The Monastery has got its name in honor to the Icon of the Mother of God of Don that saved miraculously Moscow from the troops of Kazy-Girey-khan.  According to the ancient tradition, in former times Sergius of Radonezh blessed with this icon the troops of Grand Duke Dimitry to the Battle of Kulikovo. Due to intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos the hordes of Kazy-Girey were driven out from the town walls ignominiously, and since then Crimean Tatars have attacked Moscow no more.
